1,000 Books Before Kindergarten - Animals Reading

1,000 books before kindergarten?! It may sound impossible, but never fear – a little bit of reading every day and you’ll make this milestone in no time. Reading to your child before kindergarten helps develop early literacy skills and will make them even more well-prepared to start school.

How does it work?

  1. Register on Beanstack, our reading tracking platform, and enroll in the 1,000 Books challenge
  2. Earn digital badges through Beanstack
  3. Every 100 books, you can receive a special stamp in our DSCL 1,000 Books reading journals (Don’t have one? Come into the library and pick one up!)
  4. At 500 and 1,000 books, you get to pick out a book to keep as a prize!

FAQs

What books do you recommend for this program?

Any book that you and your child like to read together is great! If you want some recommendations, our popular Grab-and-Go backpacks have 10 books picked by our librarians and are available to check out. (Bonus: the backpacks only count as 1 checkout, so you get 10 books for the price of 1!)

How old does my child have to be to participate?

Your child can start at any age from birth to age 5. The challenge ends once they start kindergarten.

Do re-reads count?

Yes! If you read the same book 10 times in a row, that counts for 10 books towards the goal.

I don’t want to register online – can we still participate?

Yes! Come into the library and ask for a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten reading journal. You’ll get a special stamp every 100 books and a book to keep at 500 and 1,000 books.
