Young Adult/Adult Services Librarian

Reports to Library Director

Qualifications:
Required

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university
  • Current, valid Texas Class C driver’s license, have use of own personal vehicle and maintain liability insurance
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure and produce accurate and satisfactory results
  • Flexibility in days/hours worked which includes some weekend hours
  • Knowledge and use of computers and related equipment and hardware and software (Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher); ability to perform data entry, review, retrieval and research
  • Ability to create promotional documents and to post on the library Facebook page
  • Willingness to perform other related duties as assigned

Prefer

  • Familiarity with the Apollo system from Biblionix
  • Familiarity with Dewey Decimal System
  • Familiarity with TexShare and other online resources
  • Ability to speak and/or write in Spanish

Job Duties Member Services

  • Creates, develops, promotes and implements programs and activities for Young Adult and Adult services
  • Prepares marketing documents for social media and newsletter
  • Prepares program surveys in Google Docs
  • Maintains a current awareness of young adult and adult literature
  • Formally and informally instructs library members/visitors in basic information gathering and literacy skills
  • Teaches/promotes the use of the library’s online resources
  • Keeps up-to-date with popular culture and technology that interest young adults and adults
  • Provides direct reference and readers’ advisory services
  • Maintains accurate and timely statistical records of programs, reference services and other necessary/related statistics
  • Provides circulation and reference services using the Apollo system and the online and print resources in the library collection
  • Accurately interprets library policy to members/visitors
  • Assists the library director in policy formation as needed

Maintaining Public Relations

  • Works in cooperation with all staff to maintain a welcoming atmosphere
  • Coordinates outreach for area public and private middle and high schools
  • Stays informed of library policies

Daily Operations

  • Ensure that all equipment is properly turned off at time of closing
  • Ensure proper opening/closing procedures are implemented including opening/locking doors, activating alarm system etc.
  • Communicate any needs for maintenance to the Library Director
  • Carry out tasks as assigned by Library Director

Professional Development

  • Attend approved workshops to increase knowledge of library and position-related tasks. Four hours minimum annually required
  • Maintain awareness of new software and technology developments, especially related to this position
