1,000 BOOKS Before Kindergarten

The program is a fun, exciting, and free way to start your child on the path to success!
1,000 BOOKS Before Kindergarten

Last February the library initiated the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages parents and caregivers to provide positive, nurturing early experiences by reading aloud to their children regularly.  Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to at home during early childhood.

Did you know that reading to your child is one of the most powerful ways to boost his or her brain power? The simple and enjoyable act of sharing books helps your child learn pre-reading skills such as understanding the sounds letters make, developing a richer vocabulary, and building background knowledge - all important skills that help prepare your child for learning to read and entering kindergarten.

Any child ages birth to five years can participate. Families who sign up for the program will receive a reading log to help them track the books they share with their children and will be awarded prizes of books, stickers, bags and toys as they reach certain reading goals.
Please drop by the front circulation desk for your information packet and first 100 book log after registering online.

Several of our library families have already completed the 1,000 books even though there is no deadline other than the child’s first day of kindergarten. 1,000 Books is an ongoing reading program and periodic book goal celebrations will take place as families continue reading. Don’t forget to visit the library to log your reading so your record is accurate.
