The Texas Bluebonnet Award reading program was created in 1979 to inspire Texas children to read, and explore a variety of books. The children then are able to distinguish between the books and select their favorite from the given year's Master List.
The Master List consists of twenty books selected for readers in grades 3-6. The List includes books on a wide range of topics that are presented in various styles of writing. Styles include: fiction, non-fiction, biography, poetry, picture books and many more. For those who want more, try Book Talk! that provides additional information and activities about each book and the authors. Follow the web link from the Master List below.
Children across the state participate in Bluebonnet Reading through their registered schools or public libraries. Those who read, or listen to, at least five of the twenty books are eligible to vote for their favorite book. This vote helps select the winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award. Voting takes place in January of each year. Click here for more information.
The Dripping Springs Community library is proud to be a registered Bluebonnet Public Library! We can receive official ballots and report those voting results for any area home school, public or private school children in grades 3-6 who wish to participate and are not registered at their school.
Please register eligible children by emailing the child's name, age, grade level, and home school and/or parent's name with an email address and phone number to Marie Kimbrough
The Texas Bluebonnet Reading Program can be as simple as "Read 5 then Decide" or it can lead you into a multitude of interesting learning situations. Either way, this program can spur an interest in books and reading that will be an exiting incentive bridge to a life time of independent reading and learning.
