From Amanda:

A Painted House by John Grisham

“Set in Arkansas during the 1950’s, this is a story about a boy’s summer on the family’s cotton farm and what it was like to work with two different groups of migrant workers. Not a courtroom thriller – still, a must read for Grisham fans!   Look for it in Fiction labeled F GRI when it is not on display.  The library also has this on audiotape in the AT section.”

From Craig:

The Yiddish Policemen’s Union  by Michael Chabon

“In this alternative history, post-Holocaust Jews are resettled in Alaska.  While the “whodunit” plot is interesting, invented cross-cultural details and dialogue reminiscent of what one might imagine hearing in an Eastern European shtetl, are even more entertaining.  It is F CHA.”

From Mrs. K:

The Poky Little Puppy by Janette Lowry

“The Pokey Little Puppy is the lovable, mischievous puppy that marches to his own drummer.  His four siblings are always asking ‘Now where in the world is that poky little puppy?’ Lots of repetition, roly-poly, pell-mell, tumble-bumble, soon has the young listener ‘reading’ along with you.  First published in 1942 as one of the original 12 Little Golden Books, this is a book I remember hearing read to me and a night time favorite I read to my children also. It is an E title and one of the Little Golden Book Treasury on CD

From Suzanne V.:

Truman by David McCullough

An excellent, full-scale biography of Harry S. Truman by a distinguished historian labeled 973.918 MCC.”

From Cara:

Morning Glory by LaVyrle Spencer

“What do you do when you are suddenly widowed with two small boys and another baby on the way? How do you take care of a farm when your dead husband left it in such a mess?  The answer? You run an ad –“Need a Husband”.  In walks Will, a man at the end of his rope, helping Elly, a woman at the end of hers.  Another historical fiction story that gives insight into the depression and the impact of WWI.  Another main character is Miss Beasley, a spinster librarian, who is anything if not smart and kind-hearted.  Look for LaVyrle Spencer’s stories in F SPE.”

Happy Reading!
